First Smile of Waking

For commuters blundering dazed towards platform coffee stalls

For mothers half-in pyjamas scrambling dozy toast

Into fledgling mouths

For exam crammers cycling sleepless towards their fate

For pager woken doctors in the sudden light

of hospital corridors.

For every grey face on Waterloo Bridge

For every dead eye on school run alley

For every slow blink in time

to the warming up of desktops.

For every knuckle rubbed lid,

Every nod into newspaper,

Every shake of empty cereal box.

If they could bottle it.

Your first smile of the morning.

With all the delight and welcome of another unexpected day.

Natural Highs (23 mths)

This morning I took a toke on my toddler

By nuzzling into his back

Its twice as euphoric as MDMA

And twice as addictive as crack.

This morning I took a toke on my toddler

By rubbing our noses together

I'm still getting flashbacks at teatime

When I start to feel under the weather

This morning I took a toke on my toddler

As he rolled on the floor in his glee

I inhaled far too deeply

Got a mouthful of dungaree

This morning I took a toke on my toddler

As he bounced up and down on my lap

It was dreamy, it was warm, it was fuzzy

As I skinned up with pure Baby Gap
